How to store pool supplies

Congratulations on your brand new pool! It’s amazing to be able to walk out your door and hop into that cool, clear water. And the satisfaction you get from taking care of something like that is wonderful. But what are you going to do with all of these supplies?

Chemicals

Stay safe when handling your pool chemicals. Chemical containers should have instructions printed on them that describe proper handling and storage procedure. Always keep your chemicals in the container they came in. Don’t move anything to a different container just for convenience.

What to avoid

Water – Do not store anything where it can get wet. Avoid puddling, humidity, and moisture of any kind.

Sunlight – Some chemicals react to sunlight and will break down and become more dangerous. While you’re at it, avoid hot areas as well. Heat and sunlight are both bad for pool chemicals.

Fumes – Make sure each container is completely sealed before storing. Make sure the storage area is well-ventilated to avoid build up of noxious gases.

Kids and pets – Put a lock on the cabinet if you must. You don’t want anyone or anything getting into your supplies especially when they don’t know any better.

Spills – Don’t try to keep things stored above shoulder level unless you are confident in you ability to retrieve them. And don’t let your liquids spill and run down onto your powders and solids. This means liquids should be stored below solids. Keep your acids away from your chlorine. To really avoid risk, avoid stacking your chemical containers.

Toys, tools, and equipment

When you are done using anything pool related that is not a chemical, put it away until the next use. Additionally, when it comes time for a long break from usage, all toys, tools, and equipment should be cleaned, dried, and stored in a dry location out of the sun just like the pool chemicals. But you should not put the toys and tools next to the chemicals. Most cleaning supplies are irritants of one kind or another.

Places where you can store your pool equipment include storage benches, a garage, sheds, portable carriers, climate controlled areas, and anywhere that can be properly secured if necessary.
