Three steps to closing your pool for the winter
General
Summer has officially come to an end, which always makes us a little bit sad. After all, as a pool company, we love summer! We love working with our customers to create a backyard oasis where kids and adults can play. Whether it’s splashing around in a beautiful pool or entertaining guests in a stunning outdoor kitchen, we love the sights and sounds of summer.
Alas, another great summer season has ended, which means it’s time to think about closing your pool. Properly closing your pool each fall means it’s easier to open the pool again next year, plus it protects the pool from any potential damage from freezing temperatures over the winter. Although, some pools do not need to be closed because they have “freeze protection” installed. Ask your professional pool builder first because your pool may not need to be closed for the winter.
Whether you hire us to close your pool or another pool professional, here are the basic steps that you should look for. We always recommend having a pool professional close your pool because of the chance of damage.
Clean and balance the pool
The first step to closing your pool is a good cleaning to remove any debris, such as leaves that have fallen from nearby trees, and any pool toys or accessories, like basketball hoops, volleyball nets, or diving boards. Then it’s time to drain a little bit of water out of the pool and check the chemical balance of the water. If the chemicals are out of balance, treat the pool as needed to balance the chemicals for the winter.
Empty water from all lines and equipment
Oklahoma doesn’t get cold enough in the winter to freeze your entire pool, but it does get cold enough to freeze any water that’s hanging out in the pool lines, equipment lines, or equipment. If water is left in the lines and freezes, it can lead to cracks in the lines, which means extra cost to get your pool up and running next year. The process for this step will vary a bit depending on the type of pool equipment and water features you have, but you want to ensure there’s no water left in any lines for water features or cleaning systems.
Install the pool safety cover
We recommend using a high-quality pool cover as the final step to closing your pool. This step protects your pool from leaf debris and ensures that everyone knows the pool is closed for the season. It can also keep wildlife and children from falling into your pool if they’re looking for a water source during the winter months.
These few simple steps help keep your pool in good working order so it’s ready to enjoy when next summer rolls around. If you’re interested in using our pool closing services, contact us today for more information.
