Opening your pool for the season

A lot of our customers gain peace of mind by having us prepare their pool for the winter then come back out and prepare it for swimming season again. In our industry, we call that closing the pool and opening the pool.

We recommend pools be opened no earlier than March. In Oklahoma, if you open your pool in February, you run the risk of it snowing or freezing again.

The process

If you have a pool cover, we’ll remove it and store it. Then we clean out your pool and balance the chemical levels. We also fill the pool back up to the proper level, as closing the pool involves draining several inches below normal level so it doesn’t freeze and come up too high.

We will reinstall the drains plugs we took out when we closed it, and then we fire the pumps back up and make sure everything is working properly.

Handling problems

Of course, sometimes we run into problems. Sometimes they’re caused by the pool not being closed properly, and sometimes they’re just a byproduct of the winter season.

If it’s a small issue, we’ll just fix it right then and there. If there’s a larger problem, we’ll schedule a separate appointment. Sometimes that can be later the same day, but it may also be later in the week.

Usually any problems are pretty straightforward if the pool was properly closed. If not, there can be more major issues.

Getting cold again

Of course, sometimes we can get freezing temperatures again, even in March. If that happens, we recommend you call us so we can come out and check it. We definitely do not recommend doing anything yourself at that point.

If the pool freezes and you leave everything up and running, you should be fine. We do put freeze protection in all of our pools that we build just in case.

Do you really need a professional?

Can you do all this yourself? Of course!

However, keep in mind that we do this frequently, and we’re experts. Having us do it greatly reduces your risk of anything going wrong. And if anything does go wrong, we can fix it immediately. Plus, our rates for opening pools are very competitive compared to other companies.
